First-time setup

  1. Open ScreenQuest and choose Set up your first child.
  2. Enter a first name or nickname, age or grade, and avatar.
  3. Choose questions per round, earned minutes, and subjects.
  4. Create and confirm a four-digit grown-up PIN.
  5. On Permissions, complete each numbered Android setting. Use the round ? button for the in-app picture guide.
  6. On App locking, choose any apps that should require earned time, or keep App Protection off.
  7. Review the handoff screen and choose Let's go.

App Protection is not working

Open Grown-ups settings, enter the PIN, and check Protection.

  • Usage Access: Android Settings must allow ScreenQuest to see which selected app is currently open.
  • Notifications: Notifications must be enabled so Android can keep the visible protection service running.
  • Full-screen alerts: Android 14 and newer may offer separate access for bringing a lock alert forward. This enhancement is optional.
  • Selected apps: Confirm the intended app is checked in the App locking list.
  • Protection switch: Confirm App Protection is on and the “ScreenQuest is on” notification is visible.
  • Battery settings: On some Samsung, Pixel, and other Android devices, remove battery restrictions if Android repeatedly stops protection.

Restart the device and recheck these settings after major Android updates. Android or a device manufacturer can interrupt special access, so always review the handoff status before giving the device to a child. ScreenQuest does not replace attentive adult supervision or Android's parental controls.

A permission opens a list instead of ScreenQuest

Android manufacturers use different Settings screens. When a list opens, find ScreenQuest, open it, and turn on the requested setting. Press Back to return to ScreenQuest. The in-app permission guide shows this alternate flow.

Narration has no sound or sounds unusual

  • Confirm media volume is on and ScreenQuest sound is enabled in the child's settings.
  • In Android Settings, search for Text-to-speech output and choose or update a voice for the device language.
  • Download voice data if Android offers that option.
  • Reopen ScreenQuest after changing the text-to-speech engine.

Narration quality and network requirements depend on the text-to-speech engine installed on the device.

Subscription help

Install ScreenQuest from Google Play and sign in to the Google Account used for the purchase. Open Grown-ups settings → Membership and choose Restore purchase. The grown-up PIN is required before billing actions.

To manage or cancel a subscription, visit Google Play subscriptions. Deleting ScreenQuest does not cancel a subscription.

If Google Play shows a purchase but ScreenQuest remains locked, do not purchase again. Choose Restore purchase, then send support the Google Play order or transaction ID, app version, device model, country, and support code. Do not send payment credentials.
